Acrylic And Score Paintings Music has always been a central factor in my life, and concert going will play a huge part in every year. I have played the piano since a child, but only got to look at musical scores when I decided to paint the music of Gustav Mahler. I had listened to his music for over 25 years whenever I was painting, been to dozens of concerts featuring his symphonies and songs, and so looking at the shape of the music was the natural next step. I then realised that the physicality of the music, i.e. the patterns on the page were fascinating, and I could isolate certain bars that really ‘spoke’ to me, or gave me those ‘spine shivers’, and put them on the canvas. So I did! Starting with the Adagietto of the Fifth Symphony, which I have painted many times. This is a very popular piece and I have sold a number of these paintings. There are sometimes copyright matters to be careful with over using scores, all to do with a composer has to have died over 40 years ago or something. Since then many many paintings of Mahler have come out of my studio!
